The Ruling on Marrying a Woman Who Associates Partners with Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: His second and final question is: If a man has married a woman who associates partners with Allah, and he has lived with her for two years, is it permissible for him to continue with her, or should he separate from her because she does not agree with him in his religion? We ask for your guidance, may Allah guide you.
The answer: Regarding a woman who associates partners with Allah, there is a distinction: If she is a polytheist, such as a Zoroastrian, a communist, or a polytheist who worships graves, then marriage to her is invalid. It is not permissible for a Muslim to marry a woman who associates partners with Allah. Allah the Exalted says:
And do not marry polytheistic women until they believeوَلا تَنكِحُوا الْمُشْرِكَاتِ حَتَّى يُؤْمِنَّ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 221]. And He says regarding women who associate partners with Allah:
they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for themلا هُنَّ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ وَلا هُمْ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّ
[Surat al-Mumtahanah: 10]. And He says:
And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving womenوَلا تُمْسِكُوا بِعِصَمِ الْكَوَافِرِ
[Surat al-Mumtahanah: 10]. Therefore, the marriage is invalid if the wife is a polytheist who worships graves, worships fire, is a communist atheist, or is of their ilk. It is not permissible for a Muslim to marry any of these women.
However, if he intends to marry a Jewish or Christian woman from the People of the Book, then her marriage is valid if she is chaste and known for not committing unlawful sexual intercourse; that is, she is not a fornicator, but rather a Jewish or Christian woman known for her chastity and for not offering herself for unlawful sexual intercourse. In that case, there is no harm, because Allah has permitted chaste women from the People of the Book. So if he marries a chaste woman from the People of the Book, there is no harm in that. And if her situation does not please him because she may discourage him from his religion, or make him doubt his religion, or the like, then he should leave her.
In any case: It is better in every situation to leave off marrying a woman from the People of the Book; because she may drag him to her religion, and she may drag her children to her religion and her morals, and she may raise them on evil and disbelief. He should not marry her, and by the praise of Allah, there is plenty and sufficiency in Muslim women. This is what is better for the believer: not to marry from the Jews or the Christians, especially in this age, for Jewish and Christian women are active in calling to their false religion, and they are also active in calling to deviant morals, to lewd acts, and to what is wrong, except as Allah wills. He should be cautious of that, and he should choose for his marriage a righteous, good Muslim woman. And Allah is the One to be asked for help. Yes.
