Ruling on speaking while reciting the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The last question from Muhammad Yahya al-Ghazwani from Khamis Mushait is: Is it permissible to converse with others while reciting the Qur'an? Please be kind enough to provide an answer, may Allah guide you?
Answer: We do not know of any harm in that... We do not know of any harm in speaking while one is reciting; however, it is better to be occupied with one's recitation and not occupied with speech, so that one is present with one's heart through reflection and understanding. This is better if there is no need for speech. As for when there is a need for speech, there is no harm, if Allah wills. One speaks and then returns to one's recitation. For example, returning the greeting to one who greeted him, or responding to the mu'adhdhin when he hears the adhan... he pauses; because these are sunnahs that are necessary. It is incumbent upon the believer to adhere to them and not be lax in them. When he hears the adhan, he listens to the adhan and responds to the mu'adhdhin, then he returns to his recitation. This is the best. Likewise, if a person greets him, he returns the greeting, or if he hears someone sneeze and praise Allah, he responds to him, or... he instructs his family about a need, or a person comes to him for a need, it is not appropriate to neglect it. All of this is permissible. As for speech for which there is no need, it is better to leave it off so that one is occupied with the recitation, and so that one reflects and understands; because this is what is required; because Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُوْلُوا الأَلْبَابِ
[Surah Sad: 29] And it is known that speech that has no need involves distraction of the heart, and it also weakens the reflection. Therefore, it is better to leave it off.
