The ruling on greeting mahrams with a kiss and a handshake

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This message came from Hawtat Banu Tamim from the presenter (M. H.). The presenter (M. H.) says: What is the ruling on greeting mahrams with a kiss and a handshake? If that is permissible, which relatives does it apply to: brothers, the father, the paternal uncle, or the maternal uncles? And does it include mahrams by breastfeeding? I mean a kiss between a man and a woman?
Answer: Greeting mahrams is permissible. A man greeting his mahrams, or a woman greeting her mahrams, is permissible, whether by handshake or by kiss. All of this is permissible. The mahrams are those specified in the statement of the Exalted and Majestic is He:
except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possessوَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُنَّ
[Surat al-Nur: 31]. A slave woman is permissible to display her adornment, but she is not a mahram in every respect; however, she is treated as a mahram in this regard. Likewise, maternal uncles and paternal uncles are also mahrams. These are the mahrams: her father, her grandfathers, her mother’s father, her grandfathers on her mother’s side, her sons, her daughters’ sons, her sons’ sons, the woman’s brothers, her brothers’ sons are also her mahrams, and her sisters’ sons are among her mahrams. Likewise, her maternal uncles and paternal uncles, all of them are her mahrams. And so are her husband’s father, her husband’s grandfather, her husband’s son, her husband’s son’s son, her husband’s daughter’s son, her husband’s son’s son, all of them are mahrams, all of them are mahrams for her.
There is no harm in a man kissing his mahram: his paternal aunt, his maternal aunt, his mother, his grandmother, or his sister. There is no harm in kissing her, but it is better to do so on the head, especially if she is elderly, or on the nose, or on the cheek. This is what is best. A group of scholars disliked kissing the mouth except for the husband. Kissing her on the mouth is for the husband, not for mahrams. This is what is preferable; it is preferable that it be for the husband, not for mahrams. For mahrams, it is on the head, on the nose, or on the cheek. This is what is preferable and what one should do. This applies whether the mahram relationship is by blood or by breastfeeding, including those related by breastfeeding: her father by breastfeeding, her paternal uncle by breastfeeding, her maternal uncle by breastfeeding, her husband’s son by breastfeeding, her husband’s father by breastfeeding, just as with blood relations. This is based on the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful.يحرم من الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
. Thus said he (peace and blessings be upon him). So breastfeeding is like blood relations. And so is affinity, as mentioned earlier. The husband’s father is a mahram by affinity, the husband’s father, the husband’s grandfather, the husband’s son; this is a mahram by affinity, whether by blood or by breastfeeding. And a handshake is even more permissible. Yes.
