Question:
A listener (M. M. A.) from Libya sent a message saying: As you know, shaking hands with a non-mahram woman is forbidden. Is it permissible for me to shake hands with my maternal uncle's wife? I ask for clarification on the mahram relationships, because my mother said: If you do not shake hands with your maternal uncle's wife, I will not shake hands with you. Is it permissible to obey her in this?
Answer:
Shaking hands with women is not permissible. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 2874Sahih (Darussalam) As for mahram relatives, there is no harm. The mahram relatives are those whom it is forbidden for you to marry; such as your mother, your daughter, your sister, your maternal aunt, your paternal aunt, your brother's daughter, and your sister's daughter, as Allah clarified in His great Book in Surat al-Nisa, where He said: : [Al-Nisa: 23].
These are the mahram relatives: your mother, your grandmothers on the paternal and maternal sides, and so on; your daughters, your sons' daughters, and your daughters' daughters are mahram. Likewise, your sisters, their daughters, and their daughters' daughters are mahram, and you are their maternal uncle. Likewise, your paternal aunts are mahram and your maternal aunts are mahram. As for their daughters, they are not mahram, but your maternal aunts are mahram and your paternal aunts are mahram. Your brother's daughters, your brother's sons' daughters, and their daughters' daughters, all of these are mahram. Your sister's daughters, likewise, and their daughters' daughters, all of these are mahram. And your sister's sons' daughters, all of them are mahram. And your mother through breastfeeding, your grandmothers through breastfeeding, your sisters through breastfeeding, your daughters through breastfeeding, your paternal aunts through breastfeeding, your maternal aunts through breastfeeding, your brother's daughters through breastfeeding, and your sister's daughters through breastfeeding, all of them are mahram; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam).
You are not allowed to shake hands with your maternal uncle's wife, nor your paternal uncle's wife, nor your brother's wife; because they are not mahram. Your brother's wife, your paternal uncle's wife, and your maternal uncle's wife are not mahram. You are not allowed to obey your mother in this, even if your mother says to shake hands with her; do not shake hands with her. For obedience to parents is in what is right, not in disobedience to Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 3696. So you are not allowed to obey your father, nor your mother, nor a ruler, nor a scholar, nor anyone else in disobedience to Allah; rather, obedience is in what is right, in what is permissible. May Allah guide everyone to beneficial knowledge and righteous action.
