The Absence of a Husband from His Wife for the Purpose of Seeking Knowledge or Earning a Livelihood

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This message reached us from Muhammad Tum Muhammad Musa, a Sudanese national. He says: I am informing you that I am from one of your sister countries, which is Sudan. He says: I came here to the Kingdom about three months ago, and my sponsor does not agree to let me go to Sudan until I have completed the year. Is there any sin on me for that if I complete the year away from my wife?

Answer:
There is no blame on him, if Allah wills, in seeking a livelihood or seeking knowledge. There is no blame on him, if Allah wills. He may correspond with her regarding this and provide her with her obligatory needs, meaning: giving her the obligatory maintenance and looking after her in every matter. So there is nothing wrong with him delaying for a year or something like that; there is no blame in that. However, it is obligatory for him to take care of all her necessary maintenance, as well as having her looked after there by her relatives who are her mahram (a relative one may not marry). This is what is obligatory for him: to take care of all her affairs through correspondence so that she does not suffer any deficiency and so that she is not exposed to any harm. As for if it is by choice, the better and more preferable option is that he does not delay for more than six months. If it is possible for him to contact her after six months and look after her needs, that is better and safer, as is narrated regarding 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in this matter. However, if that is not possible, there is no blame, if Allah wills, in a year or something like that, or even more, if it is for beneficial knowledge or for worldly matters for necessary earnings and seeking a livelihood due to his need for it. Yes.
The presenter: He also asks: Is there a saying that the period for a married man is six months? Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
The Shaykh: It was mentioned earlier that it is narrated from 'Umar that it is six months, and that this is from the category of unlegislated public interests (maslakh mursalah); for the sake of concern for the woman. Yes. And the concern is also for him; he may need to satisfy his desire, and she may need to satisfy her desire. So if he travels to her after six months to satisfy the desire and to check on the situation, that is better if it is possible. Yes.
