The Order of Kinship in Maintaining Family Ties
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our brother asks in his third question about the degree of kinship in which maintaining family ties is obligatory and cutting them off is forbidden?
Answer: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified kinship. He said in the authentic hadith, when the man asked him:Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 5 And in the other wording: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 4:884.
The first of the relatives and the most deserving of maintaining ties are the fathers and mothers, the grandfathers and grandmothers, then the children and their children, male and female, then the brothers and their children, male and female, then the paternal uncles, maternal uncles, maternal aunts, paternal aunts, and their children, then the closest and then the next closest among the degrees of the paternal uncles' descendants. So the most deserving of the obligatory maintenance of ties are the fathers and mothers, the grandfathers and grandmothers; they are the most deserving of people. And the most deserving of them absolutely is the mother, then the father is in the fourth degree, and so on for the grandmothers and grandfathers.
The point is that the ancestors and descendants are the most deserving of people of kindness and maintaining ties, then next are the collateral relatives, such as brothers and sisters, paternal uncles and aunts, and their children, and so on, the closest then the next closest. Maintaining ties is obligatory according to one's ability. So if he is able to maintain ties with the father and mother, he does so, and he is not required to maintain ties with the children and brothers if he is unable. If he maintains ties with the children, fathers, and mothers but is unable to do so with the brothers, that is dropped from him. If he is able to maintain ties with the brothers, what he is unable to do regarding maintaining ties with their children, the paternal uncles and aunts, and maternal uncles is dropped from him, and so on, the closest then the next closest, provided he has the ability, if they are poor. But if they are rich, the maintenance of ties is through kind words, good visits, greeting them, inquiring about their conditions, and doing what benefits them from other good deeds. Yes.
