Ruling on Abandoning Congregational Prayer in the Mosque

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: He also says: A man does not pray in the mosque, knowing that he is a neighbor of the mosque, and he is a religious man who prays at home with his children. This man's excuse is that the people who pray in the mosque have envy, hatred, or resentment in their hearts. What is the ruling on this, may Allah guide you?
The answer: This man has committed a wrong; because praying in the house is not permissible, and it is obligatory for the believer to pray with the people in the mosques in congregation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hears the call for prayer and and does not come (to the mosque for prayer), his prayer will not be accepted from him, unless he has a (legitimate) excuse.من سمع النداء فلم يأت فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:308
This is a severe warning. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a blind man who asked him:
He said: O Messenger of Allah! Do I have a dispensation to pray in my house? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Do you hear the call to prayer? He said: Yes. He said: Then respond.قال: يا رسول الله! هل لي من رخصة أن أصلي في بيتي؟ فقال له النبي ﷺ: هل تسمع النداء بالصلاة؟ قال: نعم، قال: فأجب
It was narrated by Muslim in the Sahih. So if a blind man who has no guide suitable for him is told: "Respond," and he is prohibited from praying in the house, then what about the healthy, capable man?! And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to burn down the houses of those who lag behind, and it is narrated from him (peace be upon him) that he said:
Were it not for the women and children who are in the housesلولا ما فيي البيوت من النساء والذرية لحرقتها عليهم
Mishkat al-Masabih 1073
.
In summary: It is not permissible for him to pray in the house; rather, he must pray with the congregation, even if there are people in the congregation whom he claims have envy or such things. This does not prevent him from attending with them and praying with them. If a person knows that there is evil in someone, he should advise him and direct him to good. As for lagging behind the congregation, this is not permissible; rather, it is obligatory for him to attend the congregation. And Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said in the authentic hadith:
I have seen us, and none lagged behind it—meaning: the congregational prayer—except a known hypocrite whose hypocrisy is known.لقد رأيتنا وما يتخلف عنها -يعني: الصلاة في الجماعة- إلا منافق معلوم النفاق
. This is a type of hypocrisy; lagging behind the congregational prayer without an excuse is a type of hypocrisy, as Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said. He should be advised and directed to good, and he should be warned against his bad deed and his lagging behind in the house from the congregational prayer. And Allah is the Helper. Yes.
