Ruling on Family Planning in Marital Life

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
They also ask: Is it permissible to limit childbearing in marital life?
Answer: It is not permissible; rather, it is obligatory for the woman to avoid this matter, except in cases of dire necessity, where there is no harm in taking some pills or some substances that prevent pregnancy for a certain period. However, preventing it entirely is not allowed, as this contradicts the requirement of the pure Shari'ah. The pure Shari'ah looks forward to the increase of offspring, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for that and said:
I will outnumber the nations with you on the Day of Resurrectionإني مكاثر بكم الأمم يوم القيامة
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:852
. Therefore, one should not expose oneself to cutting off offspring.
However, if dire necessity calls for delaying pregnancy for some time to raise the children—because she is carrying in this manner and needs to delay pregnancy for a certain period until she is able to raise those who are already there—then there is no harm. For example, she takes pills that prevent pregnancy for a year or two until she weans them and until she is free to prepare for a new pregnancy. This is permissible, if Allah wills, and there is no blame in it.
