Ruling on a farm worker giving his guests from the farm
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: His third question in this letter says: I work in a farm, and there are grapes, dates, and vegetables there. I carry some of these items, knowing that we are all on the account of the farm manager. If one of our friends visits, we feed him without the manager's knowledge. If we ask them for something, they give us from their farm. If they ask us for something, we give them from our farm. If we tell them: "This is forbidden," they say: "This is our food on our account, and we are giving you from our food." Is this permissible for us? May Allah guide you to what is good in this world and the Hereafter?
The answer: This requires detailed explanation; a general statement would be insufficient. As for a guest being given fruit that is present, without carrying it away—meaning he does not take anything with him but eats with you—there is no harm, if Allah wills. There is a hadith indicating this. However, giving it to people as a gift is not allowed, except with the permission of the farm owner. Do not give it to anyone except with the permission of the farm owner. But if someone visits you and you serve them something from the farm, such as grapes, watermelon, or fresh dates, there is no harm, provided they only eat it and do not carry anything with them. Do not give them anything to take away; rather, let them eat with you from what Allah has provided. This is permissible, if Allah wills. However, if they take something with them to take out, or if you give them something as a gift, that is not allowed, except with the permission of the farm owner.
