The ruling on placing green palm fronds on the grave

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
They say that on the days of the festival we place green palm fronds on the graves of the dead. Is there a basis for this?

Answer:
There is no basis for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed palm fronds on the graves of two people being punished, and Allah showed him their punishment. He said:
One of them carried tales أما أحدهما فكان يمشي بالنميمة
Sahih Muslim 292a
and refuge is sought in Allah
and the other did not keep himself safe from being defiled by urineوأما الآخر فكان لا يستتر من بوله
Sahih Muslim 292a
He did not place them on the graves of the Companions in al-Baqi', nor on Uhud. This indicates that this was specific to those two graves. Therefore, a person should not place palm fronds, flowers, or anything else on the graves, neither on the days of the festival nor at any other time. Rather, this is reprehensible and a religious innovation. Yes.
