Question:
The questioner: This is a questioner from Riyadh, whose name is symbolized by (A. A. A). He says: A man has a large amount of wealth, and he does not pay its zakat for several years, more than ten years, and he has not paid its zakat. When we advised him, we said: Pay the zakat on this wealth. He said: I will pay its zakat after every fifteen years. We ask for your guidance in this matter?
Answer:
This is a reprehensible matter and is not permissible. It is obligatory for the Muslim to pay zakat every year, and it is not permissible to delay it, whether for two years or more. He must pay zakat at the end of every year on all the wealth he has, whether gold, silver, or trade goods. Likewise, if he is farming, he pays the zakat on the crops, the zakat on the dates, the zakat on the grapes, every year in its year, if it reaches the nisab. This is the obligatory duty; because Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Al-An'am: 141]. He said: [Al-Baqarah: 43]. This is for immediacy: establish the prayer at its time, and give the zakat at its time.
And He informed (Exalted and Majestic is He) that those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the cause of Allah are promised painful punishment. He said (Exalted and Majestic is He): [At-Tawbah: 34-35]. This is the recompense for the one who is stingy with the zakat and does not pay its right. Any wealth whose zakat is not paid is a hoard, and its owner will be punished for it on the Day of Resurrection.
And in the authentic hadith: "That those who do not pay the zakat on the Day of Resurrection will be punished. That wealth of gold and silver, and what serves as its equivalent, will be heated for them, and they will be punished with it, on a day whose measure is fifty thousand years, until judgment is passed between the people. Then he will see his way, either to Paradise or to the Fire. The owner of camels, cattle, and sheep will be prostrated on the ground by them. They will pass over him, trampling him with their hooves and cloven hooves. The camels with their hooves, and the cattle and sheep with their cloven hooves. The cattle and sheep will gore him with their horns, and the camels will strike him with their mouths. Whenever the last of them passes over him, the first of them will return to him, on a day whose measure is fifty thousand years." This is his recompense. We ask Allah for safety.
So it is obligatory for the one who has zakatable wealth to pay the zakat every year. And this person must repent to Allah, and pay the zakat for the years that have passed. He must repent, feel remorse, cease the sin, seek forgiveness, and hasten to pay the zakat for the past years. Yes.
