Question:
The second question in the letter from the questioner from the Arab Republic of Egypt says: What is the meaning of the noble verse:
And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing."وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ
[At-Tawbah: 65] from Surat At-Tawbah, up to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
because they were criminals.بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ
[At-Tawbah: 66]? And upon whom was this verse revealed, O honorable Shaykh?

Answer:
These people, during the Battle of Tabuk, spoke words that were not good; so Allah revealed this noble verse concerning them:
And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"
[At-Tawbah 9:65]
Do not make excuses to us; you have disbelieved after your faith [At-Tawbah: 65-66]. Some people had spoken ugly words: "We have not seen people like these companions of ours who are more greedy in their bellies, more lying in their tongues, and more cowardly in the encounter," meaning the Messenger and his Companions (peace and blessings be upon him). This was apostasy and mockery; therefore, Allah ruled concerning them by His saying:
Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of youلا تَعْتَذِرُوا قَدْ كَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ إِنْ نَعْفُ عَنْ طَائِفَةٍ مِنْكُمْ
[At-Tawbah: 66], which is the one who denied
We will punish another faction because they were criminals.نُعَذِّبْ طَائِفَةً بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ
[At-Tawbah: 66].
The intended meaning is: that the one who mocks the religion, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or the Qur'an, or Islam, becomes a disbeliever. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah bless you.
