Question:
With the blessing of Allah, we begin this session with a question from one of the listening brothers. He asks: What is the degree of authenticity of this hadith, O Shaykh? It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: “While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and said: ‘By my father and mother, this Qur'an has slipped away from me.’” What is the authenticity of this hadith, O Shaykh?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance.
Ibn Kathir mentioned this hadith in the virtues of the Qur'an. It is a very strange hadith, and a group of scholars have weakened it. The most likely view is that it is weak. In such matters, the believer asks his Lord for success and assistance in memorizing the Qur'an, and he strives to increase his recitation of it, at appropriate times, until he memorizes it. This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Therefore, it is the Sunnah for him to keep it fresh through frequent recitation.
As for designating a specific prayer for this purpose, there is no authentic hadith regarding it. However, the believer seeks out appropriate times, strives to recite the Qur'an, increases his recitation, and keeps it fresh until he memorizes it. This is the Sunnah. Yes.
