The Ruling on Collective Supplication at Graves and During Burial

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner is asking from two parts. He asks and says: What is the ruling on collective supplication at the grave?

Answer:
Collective supplication at the grave has no basis. The fact that they intentionally say, “We supplicate together; I supplicate and you say ‘Ameen,’” this has no basis. We do not know of any basis for it from the righteous predecessors, nor from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). But if a person supplicates and they say “Ameen” to his supplication without intention, hearing him supplicate and saying, “O Allah, forgive him,” and they say, “Ameen,” there is nothing wrong with that. If a person supplicates when they have buried the deceased, saying, “O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him, O Allah, grant him firmness with the firm word,” and some of those present say, “Ameen,” it does no harm. As for them agreeing that this one supplicates and these ones say “Ameen,” this has no basis and should not be done; because this is intentional collective supplication, so it has no basis. It was not reported to us from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction). Leaving it is what is appropriate.
As for if a person supplicates, they hear him supplicating, and they say “Ameen” without intention, without gathering, and without intention for this matter, when they were only supplicating for the deceased after they had buried him, and they said “Ameen” to the supplication of the one who was supplicating, hearing one person supplicate and saying, “Ameen, Ameen,” or this one supplicates and the other says, “Ameen”; it does no harm without intention and without collusion.

The presenter : And what about supplication after the burial of the deceased in a group, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : This is it. No, each person supplicates for himself. Each person says: “O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him, O Allah, grant him firmness with the firm word,” like that. They do not need to agree on one saying. But if one person supplicates and they say “Ameen” without intention, hearing him supplicate and saying “Ameen” without intention; there is no blame on them.
