Question:
The questioner sent a set of questions, and the questioner is actually from Yemen and resides in Jeddah. He says in this question: Please issue a ruling for us: Do the deceased, whose souls are in the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection), meet one another, and do they recognize each other?
Answer:
There is nothing clear in this matter—meaning—by which one can be certain, but there are occurrences that indicate that souls may meet, yet there is nothing we know in the authentic hadiths that indicates this. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: This is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
As for their meeting in this world, their meeting... the meeting of the soul of the deceased with the sleeper, I do not know of anything authentic regarding this. However, Ibn al-Qayyim and others have mentioned that this is a reality, and that souls may meet. People say many things of this kind regarding meetings that indicate that it exists. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is capable of everything. The matter of the soul is a strange matter, a specific matter, so it is possible that it is in Paradise and that it meets with other souls.
Many people have narrated to us occurrences and incidents that indicate meetings. Among them is that a man told me that his father had a debt to so-and-so. He saw in a dream another person saying to him: I have a claim of such and such against your father, and so-and-so has such and such, and so-and-so has such and such. So the son asked them, and they said: Yes, it is all true.
The point is: that things occur that are not suspected of being false, which indicate that there is some meeting. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) knows best.

The souls of the believers are in Paradise, as birds that hang from the trees of Paradise, and the souls of the martyrs are in the bellies of green birds that roam in Paradise wherever they will, then they return to lamps hanging beneath the Throne.
إن أرواح المؤمنين في الجنة، طائر يعلق بشجر الجنة، وأرواح الشهداء في أجواف طير خضر تسرح في الجنة حيث شاءت، ثم تأوي إلى قناديل معلقة تحت العرشAs for their meeting in this world, their meeting... the meeting of the soul of the deceased with the sleeper, I do not know of anything authentic regarding this.
