The Meaning of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: {On the Brink of a Collapsing Cliff...}

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence! In the name of Allah, we begin this session with a question from the questioner Muhammad Sa'id, who inquires about the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
on the edge of a bank about to collapse, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hellعَلَى شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَانْهَارَ بِهِ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ
[At-Tawbah: 109]. He asks: What is it that collapses in this cliff? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
This verse is explained by what comes before it. He (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
And [there are] those [hypocrites] who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, "We intended only the best." And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars.
[At-Tawbah 9:107]
Do not stand in it forever. A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy that you stand in it. In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves. Is he who founded his building on piety from Allah and approval better, or he who founded his building on the brink of a collapsing cliff, so it collapsed with him into the Fire of Hell? And Allah does not guide the people who are unjust. [At-Tawbah: 107-109].
He (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that what the hypocrites did in building the Mosque of Harm was that the hypocrites built a house they called a mosque and said: It is for those in need in the cold, rainy night. This was when he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out for Tabuk, and they asked him to pray in it, so he said:
We are on a journey, but when we return, we will pray in it, if Allah wills
When he returned and approached Medina, news came down from the sky that it was the Mosque of Harm, and that it was done by the hypocrites to harm the Mosque of Quba. And Allah said to him regarding it:
Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first dayلا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا لَمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى التَّقْوَى مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ
[At-Tawbah: 108]. And the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Mosque of Quba are better than this mosque which they founded on affliction, corruption, and a defective intention. And they used to say: Abu 'Amr the open sinner will come, a man who was called the Monk, intending that he would stay in it and be at war with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions.
So Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) informed His Prophet of their wicked intention and forbade him to stand in it,
A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.
[At-Tawbah: 108]. Then He, the Exalted, said:
Then is one who laid the foundation of his building on righteousness [with fear] from Allah and [seeking] His approval better
[At-Tawbah: 109], like the Mosque of Quba and the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),
A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.
[At-Tawbah: 108]. Then He, the Exalted, said:
Then is one who laid the foundation of his building on righteousness [with fear] from Allah and [seeking] His approval better or one who laid the foundation of his building on the edge of a bank about to collapse, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hellأَفَمَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَانَهُ عَلَى تَقْوَى مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانٍ خَيْرٌ أَمْ مَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَانَهُ عَلَى شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَانْهَارَ بِهِ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ
[At-Tawbah: 109], meaning: like those who founded this building, which is a cause for their falling into Hell... their building.
The intent is their threat, otherwise the building is not the intent; the building is not the intent. The intent is: that they founded their wicked deed on the brink of a collapsing cliff. So this which they founded—and their intention was that Abu 'Amr the open sinner would come and fight the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and fight the Muslims—that this is a wicked foundation... a false foundation... a foundation that leads its people to plunge them into Hell. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
