The ruling on one who steals something, then repents, and does not know its owner

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, who used the code name (K. Abdullah. A) from the city of Abha, says: I was young, and I stole a gold chain. Now I do not know its owners. What should I do in this matter?

Answer:
If you do not know its owners, give it in charity on their behalf. Give the chain in charity on behalf of its owners. Give it to some of the poor with the intention that it is for the unknown owner, so that he will receive the reward for it. And you will be absolved of it, along with repentance to Allah and regret. You must repent and feel regret for what you did, resolve not to return to it, and give it in charity to some of the poor with the intention that it is for its owners.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
