The Minimum and Maximum Duration of Menstruation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
She asks: How many days, according to the Shari'ah and the pure Sunnah, is the duration of the legal excuse?

Answer:
The correct view is that there is no limit to its minimum or maximum, but the most common duration is six or seven days; this is the most common. It may reach fifteen days. The majority of scholars hold that it does not exceed fifteen days. If it exceeds that, it is irregular non-menstrual bleeding, and she prays, fasts, and is lawful for her husband. If it is fifteen days or less, it is considered her custom, and she continues with it. If it decreases, she becomes pure; she becomes pure after that.
In any case, the custom increases and decreases. It may be six or seven days, and it may increase by a day or decrease by a day. So the believing woman sits [abstains] as long as she sees blood, even if the custom increases or decreases. On the correct view, she sits, does not pray, does not fast, and is not lawful for her husband until she becomes pure and performs the full ritual bath.
However, if it continues with her up to fifteen days, which is the limit on the correct view, and if it exceeds fifteen days, she considers it irregular non-menstrual bleeding. She prays, fasts, and is lawful for her husband, and she returns to her known custom before this increase, and continues with it, whether it was six, seven, eight, or ten days. Because when it exceeded half the month, it became clear that it is irregular non-menstrual bleeding and not the known custom. The legal custom does not exceed half the month; its maximum and limit is half the month. Yes.
