The Ruling on Bringing Children to Mosques

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is your opinion, Your Eminence, regarding those who bring their children to the mosques to perform the prayer, knowing that the children do not read or memorize from the Qur'an, not even Surat al-Fatihah? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
If it is convenient for him to stay at home, that is good so that he does not bother anyone. If it is not convenient because she likes to pray with the people, or to hear the lesson and benefit, or the sermon, there is no blame on her, even if she has small boys with her. This is because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed in an authentic hadith that he: "would enter the prayer intending to lengthen it—intending to lengthen it—then he would hear the crying of a child and would shorten it so as not to burden his mother." This indicates that the boys pray with them, and he did not forbid them from bringing small boys. Likewise, in an authentic hadith, when he was delayed in some nights regarding the 'Isha' prayer, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)said: "O Messenger of Allah! The women and the boys have fallen asleep." This indicates that the boys attend.
The conclusion is: that the presence of boys with their mothers or with their fathers is a matter with which there is no problem. If the child is not of the age of prayer, and she brings him so that she can feel at ease, so that she can pray with the people, and so that she can hear the sermon and the benefit, then there is no problem with that. And if it is possible for someone to keep him for her at her home, so that she is not annoyed and does not annoy anyone with him, then that is more preferable and better if that is possible. Yes.
