Question:
I ask for clarification of the meaning of the following hadith:?
Answer:
This hadith is acceptable, and its well-known wording is:Bulugh al-Maram 16:92. This indicates the virtue of defending one’s brother. A Muslim man defends his brother, and a woman defends her brother in Allah and her sister in Allah. If he sees someone speaking about his honor, he says: “O my brother! Fear Allah. This has not reached us, and we know of him nothing but good,” provided he knows of him only good and has not been informed of anything but good about him. This is because backbiting has great evil and serious corruption. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says: [Al-Hujurat: 12]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: , meaning: they are the people of backbiting.
The point is that backbiting is forbidden and one of the major sins, so one must guard against it. If a Muslim man or woman hears someone backbiting, he or she should respond and say: “O my brother! Fear Allah.” She says to him: “O my brother! Fear Allah.” The man says to him: “O my brother! Fear Allah,” or to the woman: “O so-and-so! Fear Allah.” This is not permissible; backbiting is forbidden. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 16:92. It is also because this is part of forbidding what is wrong. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded the forbidding of what is wrong. He, Mighty and Majestic, said: [Al-Imran: 104]. And He, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: [Al-Tawbah: 71]. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 49a. Yes.
