The Ruling on Dyeing the Beard and Mustache with Pure Black

Question:
Our brother asks and says: We have seen many people using pure black dye for their beards and mustaches. Is this forbidden or permissible?

Answer:
It is recommended for the believing man and the believing woman to change gray hair to red or yellow, or with henna and katam; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): . So the Sunnah is to change the gray hair and not leave it white, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): . It is recommended for us Muslims, all men and women, to change the gray hair to yellow or red, or to black mixed with red, like henna and katam; acting in accordance with the Sunnah and differing from the Jews and the Christians in this matter.
However, it should not be changed to pure black, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): . In the other wording: . Muslim narrated it in his Sahih, and Imam Ahmad, al-Nasa'i, and Abu Dawud narrated it with a sound chain from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: . This is a severe warning. This warning indicates the prohibition of dyeing with pure black. However, it is recommended for the believing man and the believing woman to change the gray hair with pure henna... with yellow... with henna and katam, meaning: black mixed with red, so that it is not pure black. It should be between black and red; there is no harm in that. May Allah guide them all.
