The Ruling on Zakah in Gifted Gold

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner (N. H.) used this symbol in place of her name. She says: One of the sisters gifted me a bracelet, and I have only worn it twice. Also, the school gave me a small gold bar. Do I have to pay zakah on this gold, and how do I pay it? I did not buy it; it was gifted to me, and I have had it for about four years.

Answer:
Yes, you must pay zakah if it reaches the nisab, or if you have other gold that completes the nisab. You must pay zakah every year from the time you took possession of it. However, if you were ignorant, the zakah is waived for you regarding this jewelry until a lunar year has passed after you learned the ruling and were guided to the good. If you pay zakah for the past period, that is more cautious. As for the obligation, it is not obligatory for you until you learned; because there is scholarly disagreement regarding the zakah of jewelry, and you did not know, so nothing is required of you until the knowledge reached you.
The point is that you pay zakah on this if a lunar year has passed over it and it reaches the nisab, or if you have other gold that completes the nisab. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
