How to Protect the Heart from Sins and Transgressions

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In the last of this questioner's questions, he asks the Shaykh: How can a person rectify his heart from sins and transgressions?

Answer:
He should ask his Lord for success and strive in his effort. Allah says:
And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himselfوَمَنْ جَاهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَاهِدُ لِنَفْسِهِ
[Al-'Ankabut:6] And He, the Exalted, says:
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our waysوَالَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا
[Al-'Ankabut:69]. So he must strive against his soul for the sake of Allah until he protects it from what Allah has forbidden him. He must ask his Lord for success and assistance, increase in the remembrance of Allah, and stay away from bad company. These are among the causes of safety. He should fear Allah and watch Him, remembering that sins cause His anger and His punishment. He should strive to ask Him and supplicate earnestly that He preserve him and protect him from what Allah has forbidden him. He should increase in reading the Qur'an and reflecting on its meanings, and strive to keep the company of the righteous and sit with them, while staying away from the company of the wicked. These are among the causes of safety and well-being.
