Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, Shu'ban Subhi, from the Arab Republic of Egypt, residing in al-Qaryatayn, inquires about the two noble verses in Surat al-Buruj:
And a witness and a witnessed thingوَشَاهِدٍ وَمَشْهُودٍ
[al-Buruj:3] Who is the witness and who is the witnessed in this verse?

Answer:
The scholars have much to say on this, and the best of what has been said is: that the witness is Friday, and the witnessed is the Day of 'Arafah. Friday is a witness, and the witnessed on Friday is the Day of 'Arafah, which the pilgrims witness. It has also been said otherwise, but this is the best of what has been said.
By the sky containing great starsوَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ ۝
[Al-Buruj 85:1]
And the Day of Promise [al-Buruj:1-2] is the Day of Resurrection,
And a witnessوَشَاهِدٍ
[al-Buruj:3] is Friday, and
And a witnessedوَمَشْهُودٍ
[al-Buruj:3] is the Day of 'Arafah. This is the best of what has been said regarding it. Yes.
