Question:
The first message in this episode is from one of our female listeners, who asks several questions. In her first question, she says: When I was fourteen years old, my mother fell seriously ill, and I was very worried about her, so I made a vow to Allah that if my mother were healed, I would fast the month of Sha'ban whenever it comes. I ask you to inform me about the following: I do not remember now whether I had reached puberty or not at that time. After a period of my mother's illness, she was healed by the will of Allah the Exalted. I am very confused, O honorable Shaykh! What should I do? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prohibited making vows and said:Sahih Muslim 1639c In another wording, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Mishkat al-Masabih 3426.
So I advise you, O sister in Allah, not to make vows in the future. If something like this happens, such as the illness of your mother or someone else, then praise be to Allah; the prescribed thing is to supplicate for her healing and well-being, and there is nothing wrong with seeking lawful medical treatment. As for this vow, if you do not know that you had reached puberty, then you are not required to fulfill it; fulfilling it is not obligatory upon you.
However, if you know that you had reached puberty by completing fifteen years of age, or by wet dreams, or by the growth of pubic hair, or by menstruation, if any of these occurred in you, then you have reached puberty. You must fast Sha'ban every year as you vowed; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 This is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam) Do not return to this in the future, do not make vows ever again. May Allah bless you.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
