Question:
This questioner is from Yemen, and his name is symbolized as (A. A. A). He says, "Your Eminence: In our country, when a person dies, they hold gatherings in his home for three or seven nights, called the Tahlil; because they recite the tahlil in three batches, with one hundred tahlils in each batch; and this is done every night of those nights. Before the tahlil, only in the first batch, Surat Ya-Sin is recited collectively by those present. And at the end and completion of the hundred, a long supplication is made, which is concluded with the recitation of Surat al-Fatihah for the soul of the deceased, the awliya (close friends of Allah), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Please inform us, Your Eminence, about this practice?"

Answer:
This, my brother, is a religious innovation (bid'ah); this is not permissible. This is reprehensible and an innovation, having no basis in the Shari'ah. Rather, it must be abandoned. When a person dies, they are offered condolences, and they are advised to be patient and seek reward from Allah, while the deceased is asked for forgiveness if he was a Muslim. As for these practices, they are reprehensible; they are all innovations, having no basis in the Shari'ah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do them, nor did his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). So they are a reprehensible innovation. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
