Question:
From the questions of the questioner from Chad — Your Eminence, the Shaykh — he says: Where is Allah? Is He above His Throne? Or is He in every place? And what is the ruling on one who says that Allah is in every place?
Answer:
Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is above the Throne, in the height, above all creation, according to the people of the Sunnah and the community. This is how the messengers came with this message — peace and blessings be upon them — all the messengers came with the message that Allah is above the Throne, above all creation, ﷺ. He, the Exalted, said: [Taha:5]. He, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: [Al-Mulk:16]. He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said: [Fatir:10]. He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said: [Al-Ma'arij:4]. He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said: [Al-A'raf:54]. In seven places, He, Glorified and Exalted is He, explicitly stated that He is above the Throne, having risen above it in a manner befitting His Majesty and Greatness, not resembling the creation in their rising, nor in any of His other attributes, Exalted and Majestic is He. He, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: [Ash-Shura:11]. He, the Exalted, said: [Al-Ikhlas 112:1] Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He neither begets nor is begotten. And there is none comparable to Him. [Al-Ikhlas:1-4]. He, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: [Maryam:65]. This is a rhetorical question of negation, meaning: He has no equal and no peer. ﷺ “A man from the Companions came to the Prophet ﷺ with a slave girl, intending to free her. The Prophet ﷺ said to her: She said: In the sky. He said to her: She said: You are the Messenger of Allah. He said: Muslim narrated it in his Sahih.
When he asked her: She said: In the sky. So he said: This indicates that our Lord is in the sky, in the height, above the Throne, above all creation. And this is the meaning of His saying, Glorified and Exalted is He: [Al-Mulk 67:16] Then you will know how Our warning is. [Al-Mulk:16-17]. This is how it came in Surat Al-Mulk. And this is the consensus of the people of the Sunnah and the community. The Companions agreed, just as the messengers agreed — peace and blessings be upon them — that Allah is above the Throne, that Allah is in the height, Exalted and Majestic is He. And from this is His saying, Exalted and Majestic is He: [Ghafir 40:36] The causes of the heavens, so that I might look upon the God of Musa. [Ghafir:36-37]. This indicates that Musa informed him that Allah is in the height, and that He is above the Throne; for this reason Pharaoh said what he said.
And whoever says that Allah is in every place, or that He is not in the height, is a disbeliever, one who denies Allah and His Messenger, and one who denies the consensus of the people of the Sunnah and the community, like the Jahmiyyah and their like, and the Mu'tazilah. These are among the most disbelieving of people, because of their denial of the names and attributes of Allah, Exalted and Majestic is He. Yes.
