The Mahram Status of a Daughter’s Husband

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a letter from the questioner (H. K. B.) from the town of Arta’i. She says: Is it permissible for me to uncover my face in the presence of my daughter’s husband and to greet him? I have married off three daughters, and I have not greeted any of their husbands; this is because I feel the utmost shyness toward them, and I do not like to uncover my face in their presence. Is this permissible or not?

Answer:
There is no blame on you in that. A daughter’s husband is a mahram (a relative one may not marry), so there is nothing wrong with uncovering your face to him, and there is nothing wrong with greeting him; because he is a mahram. A daughter’s husband, a granddaughter’s husband, a son’s daughter’s husband, a mother’s husband, and a grandmother’s husband are all mahrams. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah bless you.
