Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener named Ismail Muhammad Musa, residing in Makkah al-Mukarramah, sent a message saying: In Sudan, we have equipment that is rented out for occasions, such as loudspeakers, chairs, tables, carpets, and cushions for the bride and groom to sit on during the wedding. Knowing that these items are sometimes rented out for funerals, religious gatherings, and cultural events, is this permissible or not? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
Renting it out for permissible and prescribed occasions is not a problem, provided the owner rents it for a wedding feast that contains no evil, or for other occasions that contain no evil; it is permissible and there is no harm in it. However, renting it out to a group that commits evil in it, such as performing the mourning gatherings that are considered a religious innovation, like holding a feast for the family of the deceased when the person dies, is an innovation and a practice from the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, namely their holding a feast upon the death of one of their own. This is among the innovations and among the matters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Jarir ibn 'Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The point is: that the family of the deceased preparing food for people as a funeral and an expression of grief is from the practices of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. One should not rent out chairs or anything else to them.
Likewise, if the celebration includes evil matters such as entertainment, the oud, cinema, and the like of what is considered forbidden, then that is not permissible.
In summary: if it is rented out to someone who uses it in a prescribed or permissible matter, then there is no harm. If it is rented out to someone who uses it in evil, or uses it in a religious innovation, then it is not permissible. Yes.
