The Ruling on the Hadith: (Among the greatest of sins...)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This female listener from the UAE says, “O His Eminence the Shaykh: I read a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said:
Among the greatest of sins before Allahمن أعظم الذنوب عند الله 
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:1722
A man married a woman, and when he had relieved himself, he divorced her and took her mahr (bridal gift) with him. What does ‘took her mahr with him’ mean? And what is the authenticity of this hadith?”

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
I do not know of any source for this hadith. It is obligatory for the husband to fear Allah regarding his wife when he divorces her. If it is before consummation, she is entitled to half. If it is before consummation and before seclusion, she is entitled to half, as He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
And if you divorce them before you have touched them and you have already specified for them an obligation, then [give] half of what you specifiedوَإِنْ طَلَّقْتُمُوهُنَّ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تَمَسُّوهُنَّ وَقَدْ فَرَضْتُمْ لَهُنَّ فَرِيضَةً فَنِصْفُ مَا فَرَضْتُمْ
[al-Baqarah: 237]. If he divorces her before he has secluded himself with her and before he has touched her, he is entitled to half and she is entitled to half. However, if he has consummated the marriage with her, or if he has secluded himself with her and then divorced her, she is entitled to the entire mahr, and he has no share of it. Yes.
