He says: My son went with some of his friends to the sea for the purpose of swimming, and he drowned and died, knowing that they were not proficient in the art of swimming. So, did my son kill himself? Or is what happened divine decree and destiny? The son mentioned is seventeen years old. Is there any blame on his friends who took him with them by car?
Answer:
Everything is by decree, all matters are by decree. Allah the Exalted says: [Al-Qamar:49] And He the Exalted says: [Al-Hadid:22] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Muwatta Malik 46:4 But it is not permissible for a person to do what is not permissible for him. He is not allowed to swim in the sea if he does not know how to swim, nor in rivers if he does not know how; because by doing so, he would be assisting in his own death; so he would sin by that. And those with him, who know that he does not know how to swim, are obligated to prevent him from doing so, or to teach him the means by which safety is achieved. If they were negligent, they would sin. We ask Allah to forgive us and him, and every Muslim.

مَا أَصَابَ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فِي الأَرْضِ وَلا فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ نَبْرَأَهَا إِنَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ يَسِيرٌEverything is by decree - even incapacity and ability
