Fatwa No. ( 5876 ):
Q: Please clarify who said this phrase, as some teachers say: It is a noble hadith, while others say: It is the statement of one of the Companions
Teach your children archery, swimming, and horseback riding، علموا أولادكم الرماية والسباحة وركوب الخيل
. I hope you will send us the correct answer with a sound chain, and may Allah reward you with good
.

A: The hadith was narrated by al-Bayhaqi from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the wording:
Teach your sons swimming, archery, and the woman the spinning wheelعلموا أبناءكم السباحة والرمي والمرأة المغزل
. It was also narrated by al-Dailami in [Musnad al-Firdaws], from Jabir from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the wording:
Teach your sons archery, for it is a means of inflicting harm upon the enemyعلموا بنيكم الرمي، فإنه نكاية العدو
, and in its chain is 'Abdullah ibn 'Ubaydah , whom al-Dhahabi included in [al-Du'afa'], and he said: weak, and more than one scholar graded him as trustworthy, and in it is also Mundhir ibn Ziyad , about whom al-Daraqutni said: abandoned, and it was narrated by Ibn Manda in [al-Ma'rifah], and Abu Musa in [al-Dhail], and al-Dailami in [Musnad al-Firdaws] from Bakr ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Rabi' al-Ansari from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the wording:
Teach your sons swimming and archery, and the best pastime for a woman in her home is the spinning wheel, and if your parents call you, answer your motherعلموا أبناءكم السباحة والرماية، ونعم لهو المرأة في بيتها المغزل، وإذا دعاك أبواك فأجب أمك
. And in its chain is Salim ibn 'Amr al-Ansari , and al-Dhahabi said in [al-Mizan]: 'Ali ibn 'Iyash narrated from him a fabricated report and he cited this hadith. However, learning archery has authentic hadiths indicating its prescription, and it falls under the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And prepare against them whatever you are able of powerوَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ
[Al-Anfal 8:60]
the verse. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
