Q1: Government schools in Britain are co-educational, where boys and girls study together, and they are forced to wash and swim in the same place, with the girls being naked or half-naked while washing. Some scholars have issued a ruling that there is no harm in this if the girls are young. What is your opinion, what is the Islamic covering for a young girl, and at what age is it obligatory for a girl to wear the hijab?
A1: The mixing of boys and girls in schooling is forbidden, and likewise
their mixing while naked in washing and swimming is forbidden, whether they are young or old; because of the provocation of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) therein, the exposure of private parts, and because it is a means to corruption and the commission of evil. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
