Question:
The presenter (T. F.) from al-Kharj asks for an explanation of a hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which he said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).إذا مات ابن آدم؛ انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به، أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
It was narrated by Muslim. I hope you will be kind enough to explain this hadith?

Answer:
This hadith is one of the clearest of the clear matters; it does not need an explanation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three thingsإذا مات ابن آدم؛ انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
This means that his deeds which are recorded for him after death are cut off, except for these three:
Ongoing charityصدقة جارية
He may have established them, such as endowing a mosque in which prayer is performed, or a building that is rented out and its rent is given in charity, or agricultural land from which the produce is given in charity, or something similar to that. This is a continuing charity, and its reward continues for him after his death as long as people benefit from it.
or knowledge (by which people) benefitأو علم ينتفع به
Sahih Muslim 1631
: This may be books that he wrote and people benefited from, or books that he bought and endowed, and people benefited from them, being beneficial Islamic books, or he spread them among people and the Muslims benefited from them, learning from them, and the rest of the people learned from his students. This is knowledge from which people benefit. If the knowledge is with his students and they spread it among the people, Allah benefits him with it, just as He benefits them. Likewise, the righteous son who prays for him; the prayer of his righteous son benefits him, just as the prayer of the Muslims also benefits him. And if his brothers pray for him, or give charity on his behalf, that benefits him. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
