The ruling on one who promised his companions a sacrifice but delayed fulfilling it due to an excuse

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener, Yasin al-Harbi from al-Suwaydirah, also says: O Shaykh! I was a student in the second year of middle school, and when I took the grammar exam, I thought I had failed. So some of my classmates said to me: If you pass, you owe us a goat.

The Shaykh: Repeat, repeat.

The presenter: He says: O Shaykh! I was a student in the second year of middle school, and when I took the grammar exam, I thought I had failed. So some of my classmates said to me: If you pass, you owe us a goat. I said: You have two goats. After the exam ended, the results were announced, and I was, praise be to Allah, among those who passed. When I intended to slaughter, several circumstances came upon me. The first was that when I returned to fulfill my promise, I found one of my companions had passed away. Because the people were in their grief, I did not slaughter it, and I said: I will slaughter it next time. So I returned to my work. When I intended to go to my family to slaughter it, I was involved in an accident, and [someone] passed away... I stopped for six months, and I have not slaughtered it until now. Is there a sin on me for the delay? Guide us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is prescribed for you to fulfill what you promised, because it is not a vow. You did not say: It is obligatory upon me for Allah, nor did you make a vow to Allah. You said: You have two goats. This is a promise from you, and the Sunnah is to fulfill the promise. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) criticized the hypocrites for breaking their promises. He said about them:
The hypocrite, when he promises, breaks his promiseإن المنافق إذا وعد أخلف
So it is not fitting for you to imitate the hypocrites. Rather, fulfill the promise, slaughter the two goats, and invite the classmates who said this to you. This is the best for you, and it is the most cautious. May Allah make your affairs easy.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
