Ruling on the use of vinegar if alcohol is added to it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We have heard that in order to speed up the production and manufacturing of vinegar, a proportion of alcohol is added to it. Is it permissible to use it, given that we do not detect any smell?
The Shaykh: Did you repeat?
The presenter: Is it a sin for us to use vinegar to which a proportion of alcohol has been added, as we have heard, given that we do not detect any smell?
Answer:
Vinegar that does not intoxicate, whether from grape juice, pomegranate, or anything else, is permissible, except if it becomes strong; in that case, it should be avoided because it has become intoxicants, or if three days have passed; in that case, it is better to pour it out or drink it. However, if intoxicating alcohol is added to it, even a small amount, it becomes forbidden. If the amount of the container is small, and what was added is of the kind where a large quantity would intoxicate—meaning, the material called alcohol, where a large quantity intoxicates—then if you put it in the container with the vinegar, or the cup with the vinegar, or the bottle with the vinegar, it invalidates it.
As for if the vinegar is in large quantities, in large containers or in large establishments, and drops of alcohol are added to it that do not affect it in smell, taste, or color, this does not harm it if it is in large quantities. But if it is in small containers, such as cans, or in cakes, and something is added to it of the kind where a large quantity would intoxicate, such as narcotics, then this invalidates it.
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke about the vessel in which a dog had licked, he ordered it to be poured out; because small amounts affect small vessels. Small vessels, whether from a dog licking, or drops of intoxicants, or from narcotics where a large quantity would intoxicate, these small amounts are poured out because they generally affect them. Yes.
As for if it is in large quantities, it is not poured out unless its taste, color, or smell changes. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. So, if it is established that there is a specific proportion of alcohol, is it not permissible to use this vinegar?
The Shaykh: Yes, if it is intoxicating, if the alcohol is intoxicating, and the vinegar is small, like in small containers, yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. What about carrying tapes of the Qur'an, as you asked in your third question?
The Shaykh: There is no blame on her. Tapes do not have the ruling of the Qur'an. A woman in menstruation, a woman with post-natal bleeding, one in a state of major ritual impurity, and others may carry them. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
