The ruling on a wife fasting voluntarily without her husband's consent

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener is Ibrahim al-Sharif, an Egyptian. His message included a collection of questions. In one of them, he says: I have a neighbor whose wife fasts on Mondays and Thursdays, but her husband forbids her. Is her fast valid?

Answer:
She is not permitted to fast while her husband is present unless he gives her permission, based on what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
A woman does not fast while her husband is present except with his permission, except for Ramadanلا تصوم المرأة وزوجها شاهد إلا بإذنه، إلا رمضان
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 13:818
Therefore, it is obligatory for her to obey and listen. If he gives her permission, there is no harm; otherwise, she is not permitted to fast, and her fast is not valid. His right is greater. Fasting is a voluntary prayer, and his right is obligatory.
The point is that she is not permitted to fast except with his permission, even if he does not have intercourse with her on that day, as long as he is present. However, if he is absent, there is no harm in her fasting. Likewise, Ramadan is obligatory for everyone to fast, even if he is not pleased. She must fast, even if he is not pleased, because it is an obligation. As for voluntary fasting, no... she does not fast except with his permission. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
