Question:
The following message is from one of the female listeners, who says: I am, praise be to Allah, consistent in performing the prayers at their times, but I do not pray the night prayer, nor do I pray the Duha prayer, and I am able to do so. So, is there a sin on me?
Answer:
This is one of the great blessings of Allah; maintaining the five daily prayers is one of the great blessings of Allah, and it is among the most obligatory duties. This is based on the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [al-Baqarah:238] and His saying, the Exalted: [al-Baqarah:43]. In many verses, there is an exhortation to maintain the prayer, to be humble in it, and to take care of it. So, praise Allah for that, and ask Him for steadfastness.
It is obligatory for every believer, male and female, to maintain the five daily prayers at their times. The man performs them in congregation in the mosques of Allah, and it is not permissible for him to be lax in performing them at home. Rather, it is obligatory for the man to pray them in congregation in the mosques. And it is obligatory for the woman to pray them at their time with humility, tranquility, and without haste. This is based on the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [al-Mu'minun:2] and His saying, (Exalted and Majestic is He): [al-'Ankabut:45].
It is obligatory for every believer, and for every believing woman, to take care of the prayer and maintain it at its times, along with taking care of humility, tranquility, and not being hasty, and keeping the heart present before Allah . The man increases his presence in the congregation, and it is obligatory for him to be present in the congregation and to pray with his brothers in the houses of Allah. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 2:308 It was said to Ibn Abbas: What is the excuse? He said: Fear, or illness.
Also in the authentic collections, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to Ibn Umm Maktum—and he was blind—when he asked him: O Messenger of Allah! I have no guide to lead me to the mosque, so do I have a dispensation to pray in my house? So he said to him (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 653 He said: Yes. He said: This is a blind man who has no guide to lead him, and yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: meaning: to perform it in congregation in the houses of Allah. Yes.
As for the Duha prayer and the Tahajjud prayer at night, these are recommended. For whom it is easy to perform Tahajjud at night, it is a great nearness to Allah and a confirmed act of worship, even if it is just one rak'ah at night, or even three rak'ahs, the minimum being one rak'ah, the Witr. And if he prays three or more, that is better. The Duha is also a recommended practice, even if it is two rak'ahs. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised a group of the Companions to pray two rak'ahs, the two rak'ahs of Duha. But it is not obligatory, neither the night prayer nor the Duha; they are only recommended. Yes.
