The Ruling on a Woman Traveling Without a Mahram

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The woman says: If I travel to Jeddah by plane in one hour without a mahram, is that permissible? We have heard one of the shaykhs say: It is not permissible for a woman to travel by plane without a mahram if the journey is a day and a night. Is it permissible for her to travel by plane in one hour or an hour and a half? Knowing that she goes to the airport with a mahram, and when she gets off the plane, a mahram receives her. Please give us a ruling, and may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A woman does not travel except with a mahramلا تُسافر امرأةٌ إلا مع ذي محرمٍ
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 9:2565
, and travel was originally on the backs of camels and the like: such as mules and donkeys. But today, the common mode is in airplanes and cars. So it is not permissible to travel from here to Jeddah or elsewhere without a mahram. This is called travel, so it is not permissible to travel without a mahram, even if there is someone who takes her to the airport and someone who receives her at the airport. Even if that is the case, it does not prevent the prohibition of travel.
The point is that travel is prohibited except with a mahram. The danger to women if they go without a mahram is a great danger. The one who receives her at the airport may not receive her. She may have appointments on the plane with some people.
So the point is that this is a danger, so it is not permissible to travel without a mahram, not in the plane, not in the boat, not in the ship, not in the car. Rather, she must have a mahram with her, otherwise she does not travel.
We ask Allah for guidance for everyone. Being lenient with this leads to great evil. Being lenient with this leads to great calamities regarding women. And there is no power and no strength except with Allah.
