Treatment of the obsessions that afflict the Muslim

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A brother of ours from Qatar sent a message containing a set of questions. He says: (A. S. B.) from Doha, Qatar. Our brother says that he is afflicted with many anxieties, obsessions, or doubts regarding matters of divorce, zihar, wudu, and prayer, and he asks the Shaykh to be generous in guiding him.

Answer:
There is no doubt that this is from Shaytan; for Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.وَإِمَّا يَنْزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
[Surat al-Furqan: 36] And He says (Glorified and Exalted is He):
Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.
[Surat Fatir: 6], and He says (Glorified and Exalted is He):
(1) Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, (2) The Sovereign of mankind.قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ۝ مَلِكِ النَّاسِ ۝
[An-Nas 114:1-2]
Ilaah al-Naas ۝ Min Sharri al-Waswas al-Khannaas ۝ Alladhi Yuwaswisu fi Sudoor al-Naas ۝ Mina al-Jinnati wa al-Naas [Surat al-Naas: 1-6].
It is obligatory for you to fight these obsessions in all circumstances: in wudu, ghusl, transactions, and in everything. You must fight them; for they are from your enemy, the enemy of Allah. It is obligatory for you to fight them, to seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan, to increase in the remembrance of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and to proceed with your work without turning to these obsessions.
So when you perform wudu, know that you have performed wudu and are finished, and likewise when you perform ghusl; know that you have performed ghusl, so do not repeat either wudu or ghusl. Likewise in your prayer, and likewise in all circumstances. Know that you have done what you did, and that all these obsessions that occur are from Shaytan; so cast them aside and do not turn to them. This is what is obligatory for you, so that you may subdue the enemy of Allah, and so that you may find relief from his obsessions in the future. For if he sees softness in you in accepting the obsessions, he will hope for you and increase the obsessions upon you. And if he sees strength and fighting against him from you, he will despair of you and move away.
And likewise, it is obligatory for you to seek refuge in Allah from his evil, even if it is in prayer. If these obsessions occur to you in prayer and they keep coming to you, spit to your left three times, and say: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan" three times. By this, you will be safe from the enemy of Allah.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided some of the Companions to this. Uthman ibn Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, Shaytan has confused my prayer for me." So he said to him:
It was narrated from Mus'ab bin Sa'd that his father said: "We were talking about something, and I had only recently left Jahiliyyah behind, so I swore by Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah said to me: 'What a bad thing you have said! Go to the Messenger of Allah and tell him, for we think that you have committed Kufr.' So I went to him and told him, and he said to me: 'Say: La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah (There is none worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner) three times, and seek refuge with Allah from the Shaitan three times, and spit dryly to your left three times, and do not say that again.'"انفث عن يسارك ثلاث مرات، وتعوذ بالله من الشيطان ثلاثًا
