Question:
The first message in this episode was sent to the program from Riyadh by one of the female listeners. She was quite lengthy in her message, which in reality consists of approximately one and a half pages. She summarized the message as follows: A woman is afflicted with some intrusive thoughts, despite being educated and having tasted the sweetness of faith, as she says. She saw a dream, after which her heart became hard and she began to doubt many of the pillars of faith. She seeks guidance and supplication for her... May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
The prescribed course for one who experiences any of these intrusive thoughts is to seek refuge in Allah from Satan, and to repeat this in all the times he is afflicted by such thoughts. If the thoughts concern Allah, faith, or the oneness of Allah, he should say, "I believe in Allah and His messengers," seek refuge in Allah, and stop. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, saying, "One of us finds that it would be easier for him to fall from the sky than to speak of it." He said to them, "That is the whispering of Satan," and he instructed the one who has such a thing in his heart to say, "I believe in Allah and His messengers," seek refuge in Allah, and stop.
So it is obligatory for you, O sister in Allah, if something occurs in your heart relating to Allah, faith, the Hereafter, Paradise, Hellfire, or the like, that you say: "I believe in Allah and His Messenger, I believe in Allah and His Messenger, I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan." This is sufficient for you. You should turn away from all of these intrusive thoughts and occupy yourself with your other activities, such as reading, household chores, talking with a friend, or with your husband, or otherwise. You should turn away from these intrusive thoughts completely.
And if it is during prayer or during ablution, likewise you should turn away from them, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, and not repeat the prayer or repeat the ablution. You should build your affairs on the basis that they are all sound and proceeding on their path, until you frustrate Satan and nullify what he intended of invalidating your deeds and harming you. This is what is prescribed for the believer, even if it is during prayer. If it passes over you during prayer and distracts you, you spit to your left three times, saying: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan," three times to your left, spitting to your left... "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided some of the Companions when it was mentioned to him that one of them was tested with intrusive thoughts in prayer. He guided him to this, and the Companion did it, so he was cured. And so it is in other than prayer, in ablution, in faith, in everything. The cure for these intrusive thoughts that afflict the believing man and woman is seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, and occupying oneself with the remembrance of Allah, and occupying oneself with other activities, and turning away from these matters, and not repeating ablution or prayer or reading or otherwise. The believing man and woman build their affairs on the basis that they have passed in accordance with the Shari'ah, and frustrate Satan by not obeying him. And if something relates to faith and the Hereafter or the like, he says: "I believe in Allah and His Messenger, I believe in Allah and His Messenger, I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan." And by this, this matter is removed, and tranquility and well-being are attained from these intrusive thoughts, if Allah wills.
The presenter: If Allah wills. May Allah reward you with good. At the end of her message, she hopes that the Shaykh will supplicate for her.
The Shaykh: May Allah heal her and grant her well-being from all evil. We ask Allah for you, O sister, healing and well-being from these intrusive thoughts, and that you be guided to the Shari'ah path and the Shari'ah methodology.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
