How to Repel Whispers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We then move on to a letter from one of the brothers; the questioner did not mention his name in this letter. Your brother in Allah (R. H. R.) says in this question: What should a person afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorder do, especially if these obsessions and thoughts are extremely bad, and I fear that Allah will punish me for them? Will Allah punish me for these obsessions and thoughts, no matter how severe their ugliness and evil may be? What should I do, O Shaykh?
Answer:
The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about these whispers, saying, "One of us finds in his heart that it would be easier for him to fall from the sky—or they said: to be thrown from the sky—than to speak them." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) advised them that when they find these malicious whispers coming from the direction of Allah or from the direction of the Hereafter, one of them should say: This is their cure. The cure for these malicious, serious whispers is for the believer to say: "I believe in Allah and His messengers," and to seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan, and they will disappear.
And Uthman ibn Abi al-As said, "O Messenger of Allah! Shaytan has confused my prayer for me." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him that when he finds that, he should spit dryly to his left three times, and seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan three times. He said, "I did so, and Allah removed from me what I was feeling."
So when a person finds in himself something that agitates him regarding Allah; like, "Did Allah create this? Is there no Paradise here? Is there no Hell here?" and other things from these malicious whispers, he says: "I believe in Allah and His messengers, I believe in Allah and His messengers, I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan," and it ends, and praise be to Allah... praise be to Allah.
The presenter: Praise be to Allah. May Allah reward you with good, Your Eminence, the Shaykh.
