Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
It is stated in "Sahih al-Bukhari" that whoever kills himself will remain eternally in the Fire. The belief of the people of the Sunnah and the community is that the one who commits a major sin will not remain eternally in the Fire. We ask for clarification. May Allah reward you.
Answer:
There are two types of eternal abode:
The eternal abode of the disbelievers, which has no end. This is specific to the disbelievers.
As for the eternal abode that means a long duration of residence, this may occur for some sinners, such as the one who kills himself. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: meaning: residing for a long time—may Allah grant us safety. The Arabs say of one who stays for a long time: "They stayed and became eternal," meaning: they prolonged their stay. And the Exalted said: [Al-Furqan 25:68] his punishment will be doubled on the Day of Resurrection, and he will remain in it in a state of humiliation [Surat al-Furqan: 68-69]. Thus, He placed the polytheist, the fornicator, and the killer in punishment and eternal abode. And the Glorious and Majestic said regarding the killer: [Surat al-Nisa: 93]. This eternal abode, according to the people of the Sunnah, is an eternal abode with an end, provided that he did not consider it permissible. However, if he considers killing or fornication permissible, he becomes a disbeliever who is eternally abiding in the eternal abode of the disbelievers. But if he kills while knowing that he is sinning, or fornicates while knowing that he is sinning, he is not eternally abiding in the eternal abode of the disbelievers, but it is an eternal abode with an end.
So the sinners, according to their ranks in sins, those who enter the Fire differ in this: some will have a long residence, and some will not, according to their state in their sins. And Allah may forgive some of them so that they do not enter the Fire, as the Exalted said: [Surat al-Nisa: 48]. And He may forgive some of them for righteous deeds and abundant good.
But those who enter it are in categories and degrees, but they are not eternally abiding in the eternal abode of the disbelievers. Rather, whoever has many and great sins—such as the killer and the fornicator—this one is eternally abiding in an eternal abode with an end. And so is the one who kills himself, meaning: a long eternal abode, a long residence, but it has an end. He is not eternally abiding in the eternal abode of the disbelievers forever, according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, but it is an eternal abode with a limit and an end. May Allah grant us safety and well-being.
