Question:
How do we reconcile the statement of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Ma'idah: 67], with what is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) died from the effect of the poison placed in his food by a Jewish woman? And what is meant by the protection of Allah the Exalted for him (peace and blessings be upon him) from the people?
Answer:
The word is a general term:[Al-Ma'idah 5:67] is a general term. He protected him, may He be exalted, until he conveyed the message; because before it comes: [Al-Ma'idah 5:67], so the meaning is: Convey, and Allah protects you; so that you do not go astray in your conveying.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) is protected in what he conveyed from Allah by the consensus of the Muslims. He is not protected in the sense that he is not afflicted with illness; all the prophets fall ill. He is not protected in the sense that no one transgresses against him; he was afflicted at Uhud, and he was wounded at Uhud (peace and blessings be upon him), and the helmet was broken on his head, and the polytheists afflicted him in Makkah. But Allah protected him until he conveyed the message of his Lord, so that he would not withhold anything from it, and so that he would not be prevented from it. And he conveyed the message, and fulfilled the trust, and Allah protected him until he conveyed the message.
And the meaning of is not: no one will afflict you, and no one will transgress against you, and you will not fall ill. No, the meaning of protection is what the noble verse clarified; because it comes after His saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:67]. So he conveyed the message, and Allah protected him from the people, so he was not killed and did not die until he conveyed the message (peace and blessings be upon him). Even though the people transgressed against him in Makkah, and even though they transgressed against him at Uhud, and even though they transgressed against him in other places. But Allah protected him until he conveyed it. And he fell ill and died while ill (peace and blessings be upon him). And the polytheists afflicted him; he was not protected from them. And they afflicted him on the day of Uhud, and they afflicted him in many places (peace and blessings be upon him), and they afflicted the messengers.
How do we reconcile the statement of Allah the Exalted:
And Allah will protect you from the people
وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِAnswer:
The word is a general term:

وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِO Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people
He (peace and blessings be upon him) is protected in what he conveyed from Allah by the consensus of the Muslims.
