Question:
It is known from the Sunnah that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was subjected to sorcery, but some Muslims are confused by certain questions and doubts: How can the Messenger be subjected to sorcery when Allah says to him: [Al-Ma'idah: 67]? And how can he be subjected to sorcery while he receives revelation from his Lord and conveys it to the Muslims? How can he convey it while being under the influence of sorcery? And the statement of the disbelievers and polytheists: [Al-Isra: 47]. We hope for clarification and explanation of these doubts?
Answer:
It is established in the authentic hadith that in Madinah, after the revelation had settled, the message had been established, the proofs of prophethood had become manifest, the truth of the message had been confirmed, and Allah had helped him against the polytheists and humbled them, some Jews targeted him. It is said that one of them was named Labid ibn al-A'sam. Some Jews targeted him with certain things; it began to seem to him that he had done some things when he had not done them. However, by the praise of Allah, his intellect, his consciousness, and his discernment were not affected. Rather, he would speak to people and talk to them, but if he sensed something, it would have some effect on him, as Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: It would sometimes seem to him that he had done something in the house with his family when he had not done it. So revelation came to him from his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) through the angel Jibril, and they informed him of what had happened. He sent someone to extract that thing from a well in the place of the Ansar, and it was removed, and that effect was lifted from him by the praise of Allah. Nothing resulted from it that would harm the people, or interfere with the message, or with the revelation. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) protected him from the people, as He informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) , from anything that would prevent the message or the conveying of the message.
As for what befalls the messengers—as happened to those before him—he was afflicted with what afflicted those before him. He was wounded on the day of Uhud, the helmet was broken on his head, and the rings of the helmet entered his cheek (peace and blessings be upon him). He fell into some of the pits there. They restricted him in Makkah with severe restriction and harmed him greatly. So he was afflicted with what Allah had decreed for him, and Allah raised his ranks thereby, elevated his status, and multiplied his good deeds. But Allah protected him from them, so they did not prevent him from conveying the message, nor did they kill him, nor did they stand between him and the message. Rather, he conveyed the message and fulfilled the trust, peace and blessings be upon him.
