Question:
I do not pray the witr, nor the night prayer, so what do you advise me to do, may Allah preserve you?
Answer:
I advise you to rise for night prayer as much as is easy for you, for this was the practice of the righteous before us, and it was the character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the character of the best of Allah's servants. As He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said in describing the servants of Allah in Surat al-Furqan: [al-Furqan:64] They spend the night [As-Sajdah 32:16] the beds: the sleeping places [As-Sajdah 32:16] So no soul knows what is hidden for them of joy for the eyes, a reward for what they used to do [al-Sajdah:16- 17]. They leave their beds for tahajjud, out of fear of Allah and hope in His reward. They also spend from their wealth; along with prayer and worship, they spend in the causes of good, they support the poor and those in need, they help the poor students of knowledge, and they strive in every good with the spending they are able to do. And He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: Stand [for prayer] the night, except a little, Or half of it, or less than that a little, Or more than that, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation [al-Muzzammil:1- 4]. And He said in describing the righteous in Surat al-Dhariyat: [Adh-Dhariyat 51:17] And during the hours before dawn they seek forgiveness [al-Dhariyat:17- 18].
So you should follow the character of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the character of the best ones, even if it is little, at least one rak'ah after 'Isha', after the 'Isha' prayer pray what Allah makes easy, after the rawatib of 'Isha', three or five or more than that, or in the middle of the night before you sleep, or at the end of the night, and the best of it is the end of the night, the best of that is the end of the night for whoever is able; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith narrated by Muslim: Narrated by Muslim in "al-Sahih", and this is a detail from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
And likewise he said (peace and blessings be upon him) in what Ayyub narrated:, so whoever loves to pray witr with five, let him do so, and whoever loves to pray witr with three, let him do so, and whoever loves to pray witr with one, let him do so, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray witr with eleven, and sometimes he would pray witr with thirteen, this is the most common, and sometimes he would pray witr with seven or nine or five or three.
So the minimum of witr is one rak'ah, witr is one rak'ah from the end of the night, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised Abu Hurayrah and Abu al-Darda' to pray witr before sleeping, and the scholars said: perhaps that is because they study knowledge before sleeping, so they fear that they will not rise at the end of the night, as for whoever hopes to rise at the end of the night, that is better.
I do not pray the witr, nor the night prayer, so what do you advise me to do, may Allah preserve you?

As He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said in describing the servants of Allah in Surat al-Furqan:
And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]
They arise from [their] beds
تَتَجَافَى جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِthey supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
O you who wraps himself in his garment
They used to sleep but little of the night,
So you should follow the character of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the character of the best ones, even if it is little, at least one rak'ah after 'Isha', after the 'Isha' prayer pray what Allah makes easy, after the rawatib of 'Isha', three or five or more than that, or in the middle of the night before you sleep, or at the end of the night, and the best of it is the end of the night, the best of that is the end of the night for whoever is able; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith narrated by Muslim:
Whoever fears that he will not rise at the end of the night, let him pray witr at the beginning of it, and whoever hopes to rise at the end of the night, let him pray witr at the end of the night, for the prayer at the end of the night is witnessed, and that is better.
And likewise he said (peace and blessings be upon him) in what Ayyub narrated:
Witr is a right.
