Question:
A father bequeathed to his sons that they should offer a sacrifice for him every year. The days of Tashreeq passed in one of the years and they did not offer a sacrifice. What is obligatory for them?
Answer:
Meaning: is it the one he bequeathed?
Q: Yes.
A: They should slaughter it, even if it is after the festival.
Q: Do they have to repent?
A: Yes, they have to repent if they did it intentionally, even if it is from their own money... If they give charity on his behalf with a sacrificial animal at any time, and give it to the poor, he will have a reward.
Q: If he did not have money and only bequeathed to the sons to slaughter?
A: If it is easy for them.
Q: Meaning, is it obligatory?
A: No, it is not obligatory: [al-Taghabun:16], [Luqman:14- 15], so even though they strived with him in shirk (associating partners with Allah), Allah said to him: [Luqman 31:15] by being kind to them and dutiful to them, even if they are polytheists. Perhaps Allah will guide them because of his dutifulness to them, his kindness to them, and his gentleness with them. Perhaps, perhaps.

So fear Allah as much as you are able
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ(14) And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. (15) But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ وَإِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ عَلَى أَنْ تُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًاbut accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness
وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا
