Delaying the Breaking of the Fast

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18601 )
Q: What is the ruling on one who fasts and does not break his fast until after the tarawih prayer ? He is aware of the ruling and the Shari'ah in this matter, and likewise in voluntary fasting, where he breaks his fast after the 'Isha' prayer. What is the ruling on this fast? I ask for your advice in this matter.
A: Fasting ends with the setting of the sun; as Allah the Exalted said:
Then complete the fast until the sunsetثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
, and as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When night falls from this side and the day vanishes from this side and the sun sets, then the fasting person should break his fast.إذا أقبل الليل من هاهنا وأدبر النهار من هاهنا وغربت الشمس فقد أفطر الصائم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1954
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast.لا يزال الناس بخير ما عجلوا الفطر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 699Sahih (Darussalam)
. One does not worship by delaying the breaking of the fast beyond the setting of the sun except the innovators who contradict the Sunnah, and it is obligatory for one who does that to repent to Allah, but it is permissible for the Muslim to continue fasting until the time of suhur, and leaving it is better; as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when he forbade continuous fasting:
if anyone of you intends to fast continuously day and night, he should continue till the Suhur time.فأيكم أراد أن يواصل فليواصل إلى السحر
Sahih al-Bukhari 1967
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
