Explanation of the statement of Ibn Malik (may Allah have mercy on him): Diminutives.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The author says in the title: "Diminutives". Diminutives are the opposite of augmentatives. An augmentative is when a name remains as it is. There is no such thing as an augmentative, a middle form, and a diminutive; names are either augmented or diminished. The diminutive is used to express contempt, to express honor, and to express endearment. It has multiple uses. The poet says:
"And every group of people into whom *** a scorpion will enter, causing their fingers to turn yellow"
The student: Honor.

The Shaykh : It means death. Is that what is intended?
The student: Honor.

The Shaykh : Honor. And the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Ibn Abbas
O young boy يا غليّم
is intended to express endearment. Yes, and the most common usage is to express contempt; that is the norm.
