The Ruling on Wealth Acquired from Image-Making

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I have acquired wealth from working in image-making, and I am willing to relinquish it to please Allah and His Messenger. What is the ruling on that wealth? Is it forbidden? Or what should I do with it?

A: I hope that there is no blame on you regarding it; because when you acquired it, you were not certain of its prohibition, either due to ignorance of the legal ruling or because of a doubt from those who permitted photographic image-making. And Allah the Exalted said regarding the people of usury or interest:
So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah. But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.
[Surat al-Baqarah: 275] May Allah protect us and you from it. From this noble verse, it is derived that past earnings from unlawful work are permissible if the servant repents to Allah and turns away from it. And if you give it in charity, or some of it, out of caution, that is good; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honorمن اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
As for the obligation of giving charity with it, I do not know clear evidence indicating that.
